Hoshi no Koe does have a 1 volume manga that semi-follows the storyline and has pretty art. So if you want to check that out and haven't so far... The storyline is slightly different and goes a bit further than the movie (for fair warning), but i liked it. A friend actually saw how much I talked about Makoto Shinkai's work and found it/gave it to me. I had no idea it even existed!

but as far as finding other Makoto-ish stuff, I've had no luck whatsoever... T_T

Oyasumi Punpun isn't really like his work at all. I reading some chapters and dropping it eventually. It has a lonely main character so I sort of get the relation. But it is too dark, weird and crazy to be similar. At least I wouldn't recommend it.

I will read Solanin as it is already on my wishlist, but from what little I read and the description it doesn't look too similar either

I watched Hoshi no Koe again the other day and I think it gets better with every watch. Time to watch one of the movies again.

Uh...even if Solanin is actually pretty good, I honestly don't think it's anything similar to Makoto-sensei works. Dunno about the other one, but judging by description, it's even more off.

As for manga, check out Asano Inio's work, especially Solanin and Oyasumi Punpun.

It's my favourite too. I really wish they would translate the novel.
