Too bad. I've actually played through the visual novel of Onikakushi-hen. It reads pretty similar to what you see in the anime (& they could have used a better translator). Only a few minor things were moved around. Also, it's much, much, much longer because there are far more details of what happened from day to day.

I think I've seen Umineko on the iTunes store as well. Maybe I'll try it...

The original creators did, their latest visual novel Umineko is better than Higurashi.

If Umineko had come out *before* Higurashi I would agree with you, but it came out later. I would expect them to get better and more ambitious with time, rather than riding on the coattails of their earlier work's popularity (similar concept and titles).

Mystery, gore, time-loops. Umineko is different yet very similar with Higurashi.
I don't see a good reason why not to compare them.

And yeah, Higurashi anime is better, but Umineko visual novel beats them all.

I saw Umineko a while ago too and it definitely wasn't anywhere near as good as Higurashi. Seems it was more horror-comedy than an actual horror/thriller. Also, I find many of the characters annoying. (Especially the little girl who cries "ooh ooh" all the time. She got better in later episodes, though.) As one of the reviewers said, I wouldn't watch this series until the sequel is available to watch (is it?), because it doesn't even have a temporary ending or give you subtle clues that allow you to start building theories on what's really going on, like Higurashi does. Seemed to me like Umineko had little to no subtlety and to "turn the chessboard around" does not sound nearly as impressive as they seem to think it does. /end rant

i just finished Umineko (when the seagulls cry)...its def horror, but so confusing, and the ending! WTF! check out Higurashi (when cicadas cry), its made by the same company and better...def horror...Garden of Sinners is horror and pretty awesome, Claymore could be fantasy/horror and my fave...Elfen Lied is good too

I´ve just seen the movie Kakurenbo, which has huge Horror tag. It has only about 20 minutes, but I guess it was quite horror-like. I´ve watched it in the morning so it probably didn´t have the right horror effect on me, but I think it´s worth the watch...

That I have to agree. The only horror anime I've watched is Ghost Hunt and Shikabane Hime. *Though I'm not sure if you can call Shikabane Hime a horror anime, it does involve supernaturals*

Try "Blood Reign: curse of the yoma" "Demon City Shinjuku" if those dont work try resident evil degeneration. Dead Space is another great option.

Not really. Monster is pretty unique in both its setting and story. Anidb lists Master Keaton as similar, but I haven't seen that so I can't say anything about it.
