This is a slice of life anime of otakus. If you have not seen the previous ones, go check that.
This season was really good (thought the ratings seem low). Main focus is on a cross dressing boy, which was really interesting (not what we expect), and it was so nice to see Madarame get a lot of screen time.

Both anime in a non-exploitative, respectful way look into the thinking and emotions of a cross-dressing boy in search of his gender identity. In Genshiken this is a (pretty prominent) sub-plot in a larger ensemble piece, in Hourou it's the main story. Genshiken is far more comedic and quirky, where Hourou is slow, watercolor stylized, serious and guarded. Genshiken's main characters are young adults, Hourou's are middle schoolers. Both anime briefly touch other gender related themes, male and female homosexuality in particular. Genshiken also covers fujoshi culture and the boys love fetish, where Hourou has a second, female cross dresser with gender identity issues similar to the main boy. In short, Hourou Musuko is an anime primarily about gender identity, where in Genshiken it's an important, but not exclusive, theme. Both treat the subject matter with both respect and dignity.

Both shows feature a mainly female cast of various otaku stereotypes and a cross dressing boy. Both have a young adult cast, Genshiken is set in a college friend slice of life similar to Honey & Clover, and Kuragehime is in an apartment building shared by the female otakus. Kuragehime is more comedic and has a faster pace, Genshiken is more dramatic and somewhat more serious (still comedic). The focus in Genshiken is on fujoshi culture, light hints on homosexual (both genders) and boys love fetish, where Kuragehime uses the the otaku more as a backdrop for it's main couple hetero Cinderella story.

This new season takes a little getting use to with all the new characters, but if you enjoyed the other seasons, you'll enjoy this as well.

I'm torn. The parts with the original cast and especially Madarame are great but the new cast is just alright. Their first and most overwhelming character trait is being a fujoshi. Everything else is not as important. In fact, this is pretty much Fujoshi the Anime in some respects so if you're not into that you're going to have a hard time enjoying this series.
Hato, which is without a doubt the focus of the entire show is not really that interesting. There's no much otaku talk and everything is BL focused, which is a shame. I wish the author had balanced it more.

After two or three episodes I just asked myself "What da F**k am I watching ?"
But still Genshiken story continued to drift into total disorientation and weirdness even thou I thought it can't be weirder. Nevertheless this is amazing series, recommended for character development fans. Loved it to the last episode !

It's always a good new to get more Genshiken!
In the end the series is a mixed bag:
Good point:
- Madarame really shine in the new series as a realistic, lucid and pognant otaku who give a serious thought about life, love and society.
- We got some scene of what happend to the other original character over the serie...
- Some awsome cosplay!
- The new cast of seiyuu manage to do a convicing job for the classic character, even for Madarame.
Less bright side:
- We go directly to the new manga without at least an episode to close the first manga parts witch was not animated.
- Weak new cast that doesn't bring much character devellopment / drive and very limited otaku discution - almost only about fujoshi sexual fantasy.
- Hato can't be perceive as a solid main character as the question of cross-dressing and sexual identity was treated in way more better fashion and depth in Wandering Son.
In the end the series is a mixed bag:
