Although this series has a kids aesthetic, it covers very mature subject matter and many grim tales. The plot progression was more or less what I was expecting, where the stories took front and center, assembling a team of superheros... errr... well close enough. The plot leaves us on a cliffhanger but additionally it hard to figure out how these combatants (the avatars) would stack up, so it doesn't invest me as the viewer, into the progression. The subject of if A power is better than B or how they could work in conjunction to beat the boss, feels very subjective so i'm not left wondering how the crisis will be averted.

It is extremely twisted and sick at times, specially many of the ghost background stories, but if you are going in looking for some scares I dont think you'll get much, specially if you watched Ghost Hunt before. The ML is daft and dense AF, many times I wanted to slap him, so dont expect much from him, Yayoi and Eiko are the best!
I do recommend it, but be warned that at times I felt I was watching a horror version of Pokemon or some sort of twisted and sick Bleach and/or Inuyasha. Enjoyable and with a lot of potential, I am looking forward for a 2nd season even.

This TV reminded me of the wonderful old anime "Ghost Hunt". With my experience of watching and reading, this anime cannot be frightening for me, but objectively it is built very cool and creepy. Characters and ghosts have some kind of background. But I can't give it a high rating for two reasons: The main character is a typical fool who can be deceived even by a dandelion when it comes for the girl-theme. Great story with a character the acts like a clown time to time. And secondly, couple of times there were moments like “they were hung in a noose for God knows how long, but were still alive when the police arrived” or “let’s write a provocative SMS to my sister and she will cross half the city in a second.” Moments like this really take away from some of the depth of the shadow side of this anime. They constantly pull you out of the mood that this story claims to be. Of course I want to advise everyone to try and watch this great story, but I didn't feel its full potential.

I rarely consume anything in the horror genre, animated or live-action, because I find so much of it dumb and boring. But this... A few moments in the second half genuinely scared me. This is smart horror, and it creeps up slowly on you. Yayoi seems at first like just a weird brat but slowly is revealed as a badass. The writing evolves from practices in folklore about exorcism and purification like in Shinto and Voodoo. It also evolves from urban legends. The spirits are given form as excellent modern takes on the style of classic Japanese ghost stories, kaidan and yuurei, many of which haunt as mistreated, traumatized, sorrowful souls who seek revenge or justice but behave in ways mysterious and for reasons forgotten. Their distress comes from going through realistic circumstances that living people themselves could experience. Watch this at night. Gather 'round the campfire for some unsettling tales.
