An usurper is an unlawful, illegitimate, or otherwise controversial claimant to a position of power who displaces established claimants by force or treachery, either in a monarchy or by subverting republican order. Usurpers establish themselves onto positions of power without having widely recognized rights to such positions, often suspending constitutional rights to be able to more easily enforce their newly acquired authority in a politically hostile environment. However, while most usurpers force people into submission after taking hold of power, some do it the other way around, instead achieving power exactly through ample popular and using said to extend their own authority in illegal or system-breaking ways.
