A nice, short, peek into the back-story of Lafiel's parents. Take into consideration that it isn't a standalone. In its entirety (all of the "of the stars" series combined) this series beats any space opera type series that I've seen, and as such all the parts get 10/10 from me.
I actually did skip this back when I watched the main body of Seikai (because I couldn't find this back then). This is in absolutely no way needed prologue, but I don't really think there is any real harm in watching in either. Only one episode, so might as well watch it. You can find some nice Abh banter here, but nothing more.
If you compare this against the other entries of the franchise, it is arguably its weakest part.
But taken together with everything else, it is a pretty enjoyable "bonus" story.

I guess you haven't watched Legend of Galactic Heroes.
I agree with tornado261 and I have seen LoGH, in my eyes the "seikai" series is way superior. Well, this special is on the weak side but the series as a whole is awesome. Also, considering the ending here, I think it's actually better to watch this one after Seikai no Monshou.
I probably made a mistake and watched this one before the main series. Now i'm not so sure I even want to watch the main one...but I'll trust the ratings and most likely pick it up anyway.
Not much really happened in this one. It is heavily dialogue driven. I don't have a problem with that (being a fan of various -monogatari series and many others) if the dialogue is interesting, or at least interesting enough to keep my attention for more than one straight minute. How bad the anime must be if it makes you reminisce about funny stories you heard at work last year?! I guess the visuals are pretty nice, considering they year it came out, but that's about it.
If anything, I would say that this has no value outside the context. The value provided is in Abh backstory and Lafiel's personal backstory, and you can understand none of it if you haven't watched at least the first series.
Even though it’s technically a prequel, you should watch it AFTER the first season (Seikai no Monshou) and ideally before the second season (Seikai no Senki 1), otherwise it will have no sense or significance – I learned that the hard way and it made me postpone watching the whole Seikai franchise by almost 10 years...
It shows you more of Plakia, who certainly deserves it, as I am almost sure
that if she didn’t die so soon in the series, she’d become one of the best 2 characters together with Lafiel.
Only too bad that they speak about their love being greater than the whole universe, but JUST speak about it, you don’t really see them being cozy with each other in any way – I guess that’s just the Abh way of romance, but that doesn’t make it any less sad
I it that even after seeing all of Seikai franchise, I still can’t fully understand the part with Abh predecessors trying to return to Earth(?) as they discover it in this OVA, but otherwise, it was a quite welcome addition to the first season.
